Bio

John Carpenter is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Geological Sciences, having retired June 30, 2000. John joined the faculty at USC in 1966, and, though officially retired, is still working on a part-time basis in the Center and with the Department of Geological Sciences. Although trained as a geochemist, John found early that teaching the geosciences and environmental science, and conducting research into geoscience/environmental science education were more personally rewarding. Away from USC, John is married to Charlie Carpenter, a former third grade teacher, with whom he occasionally works in leading teacher workshops and evaluating educational projects. John and Charlie are the parents of three grown children, and the grandparents of seven. When not enjoying life and an occasional game of golf at home, near Lake Murray, they can be found at Pawley's Island. John, Charlie and Phil Astwood have formed a small consulting company, Palmetto Educational Consultants. John is currently serving as an External Project Evaluator for a project involving at-risk middle school children.
