Research Summary
My research has focused on the use of Satellite Remote Sensing for studying ocean circulation utilizing both active microwave sensors (altimeters, scatterometers, imagers) and passive optical sensors (ocean color and sea-surface-temperature), as well as in the combination of passive/active (radiometer/radar) instruments. Remote sensing has revolutionized the scientific study of the Earth by enabling measurements of more detailed and hitherto unexplored phenomena with spatially extensive and global perspectives. Because of the specialized nature of this work, I have spent a considerable portion of my efforts and resources establishing a state-of-the-art “Satellite Oceanography Laboratory.” The resources within this laboratory allow my research team to perform nationally and internationally recognized research in the application of remote sensing to understand ocean dynamics and biological processes. Some of the satellite data-processing techniques developed by my research team are both novel and unique in their application to the study of oceanographic and meteorological processes, and climate change. My numerical modeling efforts include both regional and global based on the Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM), using Coupled ocean model simulations from NOAA/NCEP Climate Forecast System (CFSv2.0), ECCO Estimates, and Reanalyses various products (ORAS5 and SODA).
