Global USC in Tuscany: Culture, Cuisine & Conversation

This program provides students with a unique opportunity to gain USC course credits while learning about culture and cuisine and gaining conversation skills in Siena, Italy.

Program Description

This program provides students with a unique opportunity to gain USC course credits while learning about culture and cuisine and gaining conversation skills in Siena, Italy. Participants will be accompanied by a USC Study Abroad Office staff member, and courses are instructed by USC faculty. During this program, students have the chance to immerse themselves in Italian culture while earning credit. In addition to taking courses and exploring Siena & Florence, students participate in educational and cultural excursions.

Eligibility Requirements

USC students with a minimum 2.5 GPA are eligible to participate in this program. All majors are welcome. There is no foreign language requirement, except for students who wish to enroll in the Italian Conversation course.

Courses & Credits

Students have the choice of 6–9 credits of USC course offerings. Anticipated course offerings include:

  • Contrasting Cultures
  • Italian Conversation
  • Italian Culture through Food
  • Tuscany Through the Short Story

Cost Breakdown

The program fee includes:

  • Host family accommodation
  • Breakfasts & dinners provided by host family
  • Guided tours
  • Three days in Florence
  • Day trips to neighboring towns for food and wine tastings
  • Various co-curricular activities and excursions
  • Welcome and farewell dinners
  • Siena bus pass
  • Overseas emergency medical insurance
  • 24/7 support from USC faculty and staff in-country   

The program fee does not include:

  • USC tuition (paid directly to USC on my.sc.edu at a rate of $1,527 per 3 credits)
  • Study abroad application fee of $150
  • Round trip airfare
  • Arrival/departure transport from/to airport
  • Meals during excursions and personal travel
  • Personal expenses and optional activities   

Application Information

To apply for the Global USC in Tuscany program, please follow the instructions that can be found on the Apply to Study Abroad page under the Steps to Study Abroad tab of the Study Abroad Office website, sc.edu/studyabroad. Click on the link for Global USC programs and follow the instructions for the Global USC in Tuscany program. Complete applications are due to the Study Abroad Office by March 1, 2019.  Students will be notified of their acceptance by email shortly after the deadline.
