First round of Racial Justice and Equity Research Fund projects announced
The Office of the Vice President for Research is proud to join the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in congratulating the first round of recipients of funding from the Racial Justice and Equity Research Fund. This unique fund, launched earlier this year as issues of racial justice came to the forefront in American political life, supports research that centers on race, racial justice and racial equity through ASPIRE Program funds. By empowering our world-class faculty, the University of South Carolina aims to promote real and lasting racial justice in our local community, our state and our nation.
Reminder: Office of the Vice President for Research now accepting 2021 Breakthrough Award nominations
The Office of the Vice President for Research is seeking nominations for three Breakthrough signature awards: Breakthrough Leadership in Research for senior faculty, Breakthrough Stars for early-career faculty and Breakthrough Graduate Scholars for outstanding graduate students. Each of these awards has been carefully designed to recognize and honor scholarly excellence throughout the Carolina research community, providing opportunities for recognition at every career level. All 2021 Breakthrough award nominations are due by 5:00 p.m. next Friday, October 16, 2020.

As the number of virtual activities and events grows during the COVID-19 pandemic, it is easy to miss some that might be of interest to you. The Office of the Vice President for Research is pleased to share recordings of some research-related events that you might have missed last week.
- Grant Basics Workshop for graduate students and postdocs: Last week, the Office of the Vice President for Research presented Grant Basics: Strategies for Writing a Competitive Grant Proposal to more than 140 graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. For those who missed it, the workshop is now available to view online any time.
- State of the University speech: On Wednesday, September 30, President Caslen delivered the annual State of the University address. In his speech, he shared many of the wonderful things happening throughout the UofSC community, including big research success stories from the past year like the new research and sponsored awards funding record of $279.5 million.
