Introduction to Music

Introduction to Music offers a survey of Western music from the medieval period to the present day, with focus on the elements of music, terminology, composers, compositional form and style, and historical context. Critical understanding of representative works will be cultivated by a study of musical elements, forms, and style periods, as well as composers' lives, individual styles, and creative inspirations. Students will demonstrate skills in critical listening and be able to differentiate between stylistic eras of Western music. Emphasis will be placed on classical music, but popular styles will be included. No prior musical experience or training is necessary.

Learning Objectives/Outcomes

The student who successfully completes MUSC 110 will be able to:

• Understand musical works with regard to compositional elements, style, genre, and historical periods.
• Discuss specific artistic periods or styles of music with regard to historical development and major practitioners.
• Understand the ways music functions in society and culture.
• Listen critically to music and develop an understanding of aesthetics and music as an art.
• Enhance general competencies in the areas of reading, writing, critical thinking, and the perceptive listening skills required to engage in an informed discussion of music.
• Continue to develop life-long knowledge and enjoyment of music.
