Root and Rebound, through public education, direct advocacy and policy reform, works to connect communities impacted by incarceration with information and the tools necessary to succeed. These tools include information about one’s rights, self-help guides, training for non-profits and reducing barriers to full employment, housing, family reunification, education and financial security.
Purpose of pro bono opportunity
- To provide opportunities for law students to work along side attorneys and clients
- To provide skills development for law students
- To build awareness of the issues, challenges and effects of incarceration on communities and individuals
Requirements or qualifications
Law students must:
- be a good academic standing
- complete and submit the Volunteer Enrollment Form
- have an interest in serving the justice system with a focus on issues around reentry.
Responsibilities of the project
The Root and Rebound lawyer and staff must:
- agree to properly supervise the work of the law student
- provide clear and timely instructions
- seek opportunities to expose the students to various tasks
- provide feedback when possible.
Responsibilities of the students
The students must:
- communicate effectively and efficiently with the Root and Rebound office and the supervising attorney
- complete tasks in a timely and competent manner
- seek assistance when needed
- perform duties professionally
- treat this volunteer opportunity as if it was a paying or for-credit position
