A project of the Richland County Bar, the Clean of Heart Legal Clinic conducts legal consultations with homeless clients. South Carolina Law students will assist with an intake interview and any research as directed by the volunteer attorneys.
Purpose of project
- To provide opportunities for law students to work along side the attorneys and clients
- To provide skills development and enhancement opportunities for law students
- To create an awareness of the problems faced by homeless people
Time and locations for project
Legal consultations with homeless clients are held from 1-4 p.m. on the 2nd Friday of each month. Location alternates between the Richland County Library Main branch (1431 Assembly Street) and the Clean of Heart office (809 Calhoun Street) in Columbia.
Requirements or qualifications
Law students must:
- Be in good academic standing
- Complete and submit the Volunteer Enrollment Form
- Have an interest in serving the indigent and homeless population
Organization Responsibilities
Clean of Heart lawyers must:
- Agree to properly supervise the work of the law student
- Provide clear and timely instructions
- Seek opportunities to expose the students to various tasks
- Provide feedback when possible
Student Responsibilities
Law students must:
- Communicate effectively and efficiently with Clean of Heart volunteers
- Complete tasks in a timely and competent manner
- Seek assistance when needed
- Perform duties professionally
