Could you please provide a brief introduction of yourself?
My name is Jonah-Mae Neri, but most friends and family just call me Jo! I'm from a lot of places, but currently call Murrells Inlet, SC my home. I am a last-year Global Studies B.A with a minor in Art Studio, an accelerated M.P.A student, and a Capstone and Opportunity Scholar. I work two jobs - one as a Student Administrative Assistant at the USC School of Law, and another as a Visitor Experience Associate/Development Intern at the Columbia Museum of Art. I'm currently a sister of Alpha Sigma Rho, USC's only Asian-interest sorority on campus, where I hold the position of Sergeant of Arms on the executive board.
Why did you choose to major in Global Studies?
In a lot of ways, Global Studies chose me. When I made the decision to go to USC, the hardest part was finding a program I could see myself in for the next four years. As someone who has always had one arm in more fields of discipline than I could count, Global Studies offered interdisciplinary studies where I could pursue my passions in bureaucratic process, international affairs, language, and arts and humanities. Where I often found myself split between so many fields of study, Global Studies offered a program where I could make each of those interests work cohesively together while supporting my professional and academic aspirations.

How has USC shaped you into the student you are today, as you approach graduation?
More than anything, USC pushed me to continue to strive for the best, not just for myself, but for the communities I hope to impact in my professional career. With so many opportunities to grow, and resources both on and off-campus thanks to such an extensive alumni network, I never found any barriers or roadblocks on the paths where my ambitions led me. I tend to get easily discouraged, but USC has driven me to constantly seek out new areas of interest and opportunity, even if the path to get there requires more work. At the end of this Spring, I'll be graduating with my degree in just three years, while also having a handful of graduate credits that will support me in my goals to pursue my master's in public administration here at USC. I truly don't think that would have been possible for me at any other school except USC.
What has your experience at USC been like?
My experience at USC has been nothing short of fulfilling and incredible. Freshman year, I was able to dip my toes into so many different opportunities, and I lived out a number of dreams of mine. I went from being a radio show host with WUSC, to opening my doors to Greek life on campus, running for various leadership roles, have developed my work experience both on and off-campus, all while accelerating my academics. I've met many friends who have supported me day in and day out and pushed me to be the best version that I am right now. There's so much that my experience at USC has left me to be grateful for, which is everything I could have asked for.
Is there anything specific you would like to share (advice, tips, etc.) with students interested in this major, or any additional information you would like to share? If so, please share.
I think, especially when you start out, it's easy to get deterred and overwhelmed by the "everything" that college just is. One of the things that I held onto was my ambition, and I think it's something everyone needs to keep a grasp on, even when things get hard. Constantly remind yourself of the reasons why you're doing what you're doing! And never forget that doing things for yourself is just as important as any other motivators - if not the most important. Take a breath - you got this!
What are your plans after graduation?
I'm looking to work full time after graduation while pursuing my Masters in Public Administration here at USC! Fingers crossed!
