Jessica Schoenherr is an Assistant Professor in the department, which she joined shortly after receiving her Ph.D. from Michigan State University in 2020. Her teaching focuses on American judicial institutions, including courses on constitutional law and judicial politics and process.
Professor Schoenherr's research broadly seeks to identify and document the nature of attorneys' influence over United States Supreme Court justices and the law. Her work examines attorneys' decisions to use new and innovative legal arguments to appeal to the justices as well as the role that litigant characteristics can play in acceptance of a case. She is also interested in the role that attorney gender plays at the U.S. Supreme Court.
