About

The Department of History offers a vibrant program of courses for undergraduate and graduate students to explore the past to better understand the present. Our award-winning faculty teach and conduct impactful research in many subject areas, including the U.S. South, civil rights, race and slavery, the environment, science and technology, popular culture and public history.

Our Faculty 

Students benefit from involved and caring professors, including several winners of the Mungo Teaching Award, the university’s highest recognition for outstanding instruction.

Our faculty are engaged in exciting research on numerous collaborative and interdisciplinary topics including religious art in Russia, the Black Plague, the history of hurricanes, Civil War memory, the occult in the Islamic world and ghosts in early modern Europe.

Our Degrees 

Research an area that matters to you and break new ground in the field of history. Undergraduates pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in History will gain experience with research through a senior thesis project and more, including access to archives and many community partnerships. Graduate students have several degree options in both History and Public History, including a Master’s or Ph.D. as well as a dual degree option with programs such as the College of Information and Communications.
