Bio

Austin Sutherland is the Coordinator for Reporting and Finance at the Office for Sustainability and manages the university STARS reporting and business operations. With years of experience in environmental studies and projects on and off campus, Austin is a great resource to learn how to get involved in sustainability in Columbia. In May 2017, he graduated with a B.A. in Environmental Studies and earned Graduation with Leadership Distinction for Professional and Civic Engagement. While a student at USC, Austin interned for two years in the office and participated in the Sustainable Carolina Leadership Program for a variety of teams, some of which he helped create. As an intern, he planned Sustainable Carolina’s signature events such as the Green Networking Breakfast and worked as a Garden intern and guide for Camp GLEA. Outside of his internship, Austin worked with Fort Jackson to analyze their Sustainability Management System and USC’s Environmental Management System to generate recommendations for greater efficiency and sustainability. Austin also contributed to environmental research at Congaree National Park, where he continues to visit frequently to participate in citizen science with his dog, Lizzie. Austin’s accomplishments and success while at USC earned him the Bruce C. Coull Outstanding Undergraduate Award in Environmental Studies and eventually his future job at the Office of Sustainability. He continues to engage in work outside of the university through civic engagement. Austin participated in the Obama Foundation’s 2018 Community Leadership Corps where he focused his work on increasing college accessibility in Columbia’s Latinx community.
