Calling all research administrators: Apply by June 2 to join STRIVE mentorship program
STRIVE Mentoring is designed to strengthen the network of research administration staff at USC, fostering professional development through mutually beneficial mentoring relationships. Through monthly mentor-mentee meetings over the course of a twelve-month work period, pairs will work together to accomplish mentee-determined goals designed to enhance research administration skills.
We are welcoming both mentors and mentees to be considered for recruitment at this time. In order to be considered for STRIVE, you must submit an application form by Monday, June 2, 2025. Mentees will be required to submit the Self-Assessment Worksheet and the Acknowledgement from Supervisor Form as part of their applications.

The Office of the Vice President for Research is pleased to present a talk by Chris Potts, a linguistics and computer science professor in the Stanford AI Lab and Natural Language Processing Group. Potts will be visiting the University of South Carolina on Friday, April 11 to share his insights on how generative AI is reshaping fundamental questions about how language is acquired and understood. Graduate advisors: Maximize the impact of your students' research through the Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) Program
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program provides funding for Ph.D. candidates in the physical sciences to conduct part of their thesis research at a U.S. DOE National Laboratory. The program can support your graduate students to conduct part of their Ph.D. research at DOE National Laboratories in collaboration with DOE scientists.
Applications to the program require a research proposal prepared by the graduate student under the supervision of their Ph.D. thesis advisor, and the deadline of the current solicitation is May 7, 2025. More information is available here.
USC Columbia Faculty: Sign Up for a Summer Mentoring Opportunity with the SC Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics
The SC Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) is seeking USC faculty willing to mentor their academically advanced high school students (rising seniors) during a six-week in-person Summer Program for Research Interns (SPRI). The program runs from Sunday, June 8 through Friday, July 18, 2025. Mentors must be USC faculty located on the main Columbia campus. If you have a summer research project for one or more SC GSSM high school students, please complete this form. The Southeastern Microscopy Society (SEMS) is a professional organization dedicated to advancing research in the life, medical, and physical sciences through microscopy. Registration is now open for the 2025 Southeastern Microscopy Society meeting to be held at the Courtyard by Marriott May 14-16, 2025. Required research security training now available
The University of South Carolina is committed to advancing research excellence while ensuring compliance with evolving federal regulations and sponsor agency requirements. To support this goal, the Office of Research Security has launched a set of required, web-based research security training for covered individuals involved in research activities at the university.
Research security training provides the information and guidance researchers need to understand potential threats and risks to the research ecosystem, protect sensitive research and intellectual property, and ensure compliance with U.S. government mandates, including those outlined in NSPM-33 and the CHIPS and Science Act. Learn more about this required training, who should take it and how to access it via the Research Training and Education Services website. Please note that covered individuals are required to complete all applicable training modules no later than Thursday, May 1, 2025.
