The Walker Institute had the privilege of hosting Consul General Rachel Galloway in her talk, “Bridging the Atlantic from the United Kingdom to South Carolina.” Consul General Galloway spoke of her career in diplomacy as it relates to enduring trends in geopolitics. What was a constant for her was working with the United States, and she stressed the significance of the U.S.-U.K. partnership. This indispensable partnership spans the fields of intelligence, security and trade, as well as between our shared values and culture. In regards to our trade relationship, 1.2 million Americans currently work for British-owned companies. After the September 11 attacks on the United States, the U.K. as well as all of NATO viewed the attack as an attack on all. She spoke of her tours in Afghanistan after the 9/11 terrorist attacks working for the European Union, never thinking that the Taliban would return. She then spoke of how she continued her work back in London with a focus on counterterrorism, war crimes, and sanctions. In 2014, she became the ambassador to Macedonia, with a focus on bringing an end to the Balkan conflict. She ended her talk by stressing the importance of strong dependable relationships between the U.S. and the U.K. and the U.S. and the E.U., as seen through her career in diplomacy.
