Background
My research focuses on intersections between Renaissance art and artists north and south of the Alps; artists’ biographies; and the reception of art. I am currently completing a book, based on my doctoral dissertation, that proposes a new understanding of the contributions of the Sicilian painter Antonello da Messina (c. 1430-1479) through the perspective of historiography and reception.
A second book project treats the frescoed façade—the painted, public “face” of a building, often a residence—in Renaissance Italy. I want to know why there are so many painted buildings from the period 1500-1700; how they determined the “look” of a city for an visitor as well as for a resident; and how artists used them as stores of motifs and ideas.
I teach courses on Renaissance and Baroque art in both Italy and the “North” (roughly, modern-day France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium), as well as the introductory art history survey.
