Art and Culture of Japan

An official USC Global Classroom Program that studies traditional Japanese art, architecture and culture. Students explore picturesque historical sites such as the Byodo-in Buddhist temple, the Fushimi Inari Shinto shrine, and Himeji Castle. The course includes hands-on training in the basic practices of woodblock printing, traditional bookbinding, and the shibori fabric dying technique. Students also experience Japanese culture first-hand through local cuisine, an overnight stay in a Buddhist temple, and free time for their own small group explorations in historic Kyoto, the modern metropolis of Osaka, and the smaller cities of Nara and Uji.
