The Scientist-Practitioner Model
Our program is built on the foundation of the scientist-practitioner model, emphasizing practice that is informed by science and science that is informed by practice in the real world setting of schools. Students are trained for careers in academic settings and effective research in practice along the continuum of prevention, assessment, early intervention and intervention for youth and their families, in schools and other community settings.
The program is dedicated to pursuing high impact research themes including child and youth development, cultural differences in development and culturally competent approaches, families and social systems, evidence-based school mental health programs, effective school-based assessment and intervention for particular disorders (e.g., ADHD, autism spectrum, conduct problems, depression, trauma-related), child positive well-being, and neuropsychology and neurodevelopmental assessment. Our students are eligible for research funding to focus on these themes.
The School Psychology Program in the College of Arts & Science at the University of South Carolina is accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA)'s Commission on Accreditation and the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) through a partnership with the National Council on Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). It was the third School Psychology Graduate Program in the United States to receive APA accreditation (1974). The last APA site visit was in 2015. The next one will be in 2022.
