Beyond the Classroom

Writing is part of just about everyone’s life, and we hope reading is, too. Learning in our department goes beyond the classroom, and we hope you’ll take advantage of the opportunity to expand your skills.

Study Abroad

Explore the world by participating in one of the university’s hundreds of study abroad programs.

Writers' Series

The Open Book and other writers' series on campus give students, faculty members, and members of the midlands community to interact more closely with authors and get more out of reading.

Student Organizations

As an undergraduate, you can be part of our English Association, INK!  As you pursue an advanced degree, you can get involved in graduate student organizations where you can learn more about your field, get to know other students in your program, and develop marketable skills.

Interested in starting your career now? Learning on the job through an internship is a great way to do that.

Student Publications

At the University of South Carolina, graduate and undergraduate students will have the opportunity to submit their own work for publication, edit or choose submitted work, and participate in the production of student publications.

Writing Center

One of our most important goals in the English department is to ensure that students leave the University of South Carolina with improved writing skills. As an English student, you may use the center to improve your own writing or you may end up helping other students there.
