Careers

English majors and minors possess key transferable skills valued by employers today—skills in writing and the analysis of complex materials, creative problem-solving, and the capacity to understand the diversity of the human experience. Broadly trained, our majors find careers in a wide range of fields. Professional programs—like law schools, business schools, and, increasingly, medical schools—recruit majors in English and the humanities. Teaching remains a popular field, and students in our secondary education teaching track find work in schools across the country. All four of our degree tracks prepare students for pursuing careers where written and oral communication skills are essential.

Workforce success

Graduates with a major or minor in English are attractive to employers because of their training in:

  • Written and oral communication
  • Research and information literacy
  • Creativity

  • Communication and leadership
  • Knowledge of global issues
