Stellenbosch University

Area: International Business Exchange
Location: Stellenbosch
Country: South Africa
Term: Spring

The program at The Stellenbosch University is designed to expose students to life and culture in South Africa and South African international business practices. SU is committed to remaining a national asset, and to leading South Africa’s efforts to increase sustainability and the quality of life of all its citizens. The campus is located in the Boland Mountains of South Africa’s Western Cape Province, in a historic, oak-lined university town. The university is a unique mix of the old and new, with centuries-old buildings and state-of-the-art facilities sharing the campus. SU is at the forefront of education in South Africa and is AACSB and ABET accredited. The program at UCT is facilitated by USAC, a Global Partner Program.

Category: 1, no foreign language proficiency requirement, all courses taught in English

Cost: program fees payable to USAC

Requirements: junior standing; International Business major

USAC determines the program fee, which covers tuition, housing, and insurance. They also offer scholarship opportunities to help offset the cost of the program.

Students will enroll in mainstream university courses alongside regular Stellenbosch students and may choose from additional courses offered through GEP - Global Education Programmes specifically for study abroad students. To help facilitate immersion with local students, USAC participants may either enroll in all mainstream courses, or in a combination of GEP and mainstream courses. USAC requires that students take one course designed to familiarize you with South Africa’s unique history and current social, cultural, and political climate.

Even though your adventure begins in Stellenbosch, USAC field trips take you beyond the city to discover the culture and traditions of your host country.  Field trips are designed to support the academic components of this program, and as such many courses offer hands-on, experiential learning trips to relevant businesses, community groups, or locations of historic and cultural importance (such as Robben Island, Table Mountain, or Cape Point). In addition, all students can participate in an included weekend away, where you will experience the diversity and beauty of South Africa's Western Cape.

Per university policy, all UofSC students will be charged emergency medical, evacuation and repatriation insurance for their time abroad. Contact the Education Abroad Office for more details.

During the semester, USAC students are guaranteed on-campus housing in an apartment-like set-up, just a short walk or bike ride from the center of campus. Students will have a private bedroom with shared kitchen, bathroom, and laundry facilities. These accommodations also offer 24/7 security, hardwired internet access, on-site shops, braai (BBQ) areas, and a variety of sports/exercise equipment.

For the Spring semester, students will arrive in late June/early January and take their exams in late May/early June. IB students will attend UCT during the spring semester.

Once you arrive onsite, the SU staff will provide a mandatory orientation, help you find immersion activities, and oversee your general well-being while on the program.

US citizens will need to apply for a study visa (formerly known as a study permit) to study at SU for the semester. Once you are officially accepted to the program, you will receive step-by-step instructions on how to apply. Applicants will need to obtain an FBI background clearance as part of their supporting documents and will need to travel to their nearest embassy to apply in-person. The current fee for the study visa is roughly $36.
