UofSC's direct program at UQ in Australia is designed to help American students gain first hand knowledge of Australian culture. This program is located on Australia's east coast in the state of Queensland. Students will attend the University of Queensland at the St. Lucia campus in Brisbane. The University of Queensland's St Lucia campus (student pop. approx. 40,000) is located seven kilometers from the city's heart on a magnificent site in a bend of the Brisbane River.

Students can take advantage of the campuses' great sports facilities and the many recreational and social activities provided by the university. The city of Brisbane is Australia's fastest-growing capital with a population of more than 2.4 million people and offers a safe, friendly, multicultural environment. Clear skies, warm sunny days and mild nights prevail and the tropical ambience promotes an outdoor lifestyle.  The inner city is characterized by parklands and botanical gardens, recreation precincts and beaches, cultural and convention centers, museums, art galleries, a casino, mall, shopping districts and a host of cosmopolitan restaurants and cafes representing many nations.

Cost: UQ international student tuition rates + in-country costs

Requirements: minimum 3.0 GPA

Study Abroad students will pay a flat tuition fee. This fee is determined by the number of courses taken in the semester.  As a general guide, students should have a minimum of AUD$6,000 available for living expenses per semester. UQ has estimated costs posted on their website, but these amounts may fluctuate from year to year.

You can search UQ's website for subjects offered during your time abroad.  Semester 1 at UQ is the equivalent of UofSC's Spring semester, while Semester 2 is the equivalent of Fall semester.

The program does not offer organized excursions. Students do have the opportunity for individual travel.

All students must purchase the Overseas Student Health Cover through UQ in order to meet the requirements for the Australian student visa. The cost of this insurance is approximately AUD$250 per semester.

Per university policy, all UofSC students will be charged emergency medical, evacuation and repatriation insurance for their time abroad. Contact the Education Abroad Office for more details.

Students can choose to live in an on-campus residential college* or share a house/apartment with other students. Housing costs and payment options vary based on the type of accommodation chosen.
*On-campus housing is very limited and may not always available for all students

The Australian academic calendar begins in February, with the first semester running from mid-February to late-June. The second semester commences in late-July and runs through the end of November. USC students can attend the University of Queensland during the fall semester, spring semester or academic year.

Orientation is a requirement for all students studying at UQ and typically occurs the week before classes commence. At orientation, students will receive more information about life at the University of Queensland and Australia as well as enroll in their pre-approved courses.

All students studying in Australia are required to have a valid Subclass 500 Australian Student Visa. The current cost of this visa is approximately AUD$710. Students are automatically granted permission to work up to 20-hours a week in Australia with this visa.
