UofSC's International Business Exchange at Universidad ORT is designed to help American students gain first hand knowledge of life and culture in Uruguay. This program is located in Montevideo, the capital and largest city in Uruguay. Montevideo offers students a vibrant cultural experience, from the historic Ciudad Vieja to the active Rambla de Montevideo beach boardwalk. USC students will join about 11,000 students at Universidad ORT, the largest private university in Uruguay. The program at Universidad ORT offers a full array of courses. Students take classes with Uruguayan students and other students from around the world.

Students on exchange pay in-state tuition directly to USC and do not pay tuition to ORT. All housing, food, and personal expenses are paid by the student in Montevideo. ORT provides a list of common expenses and their estimated costs. The actual cost can differ depending on the student’s lifestyle and accomodations. To get an idea of life on site, you will find on the numbeo website indications on the cost of living in Uruguay compared to other countries in the world.

Students are allowed to enroll in up to 5 courses at Universidad ORT and typically earn 12 credit hours per semester. Two months before the semester begins, a full list of courses offered during the semester is sent out to students. There is a select number of English courses available each semester.

Living in Montevideo, students will have the opportunity to enjoy all of the comforts and excitement of life in a capital city while also enjoying the wide array of outdoor activities of life in a coastal city. Playa de los Pocitos is located only 20 minutes from the Universidad ORT campus, and students are able to participate in exciting activities like surfing, parasailing, and waterskiing.

The program does not offer organized excursions, however students do have the opportunity for individual travel. Local beaches are minutes away from the city center, and Montevideo offers a variety of parks and historical sites throughout the city. Both Brazil and Argentina are only a day trip away!

Per university policy, all UofSC students will be charged emergency medical, evacuation and repatriation insurance for their time abroad. Contact the Education Abroad Office for more details. ORT requires international students to show proof of health insurance as part of the application process.

ORT does not offer on-campus residency halls but can provide a list of off-campus housing options to students. International students are expected to select and pay for their own accommodation.  Students can expect to pay $400-$550 per month for housing and utilities.

The academic calendar at ORT is not the same as a traditional U.S. semester. UofSC students can attend Universidad ORT during the spring semester, which runs from March-July.

Orientation is a requirement for all new students. Orientation Week is held the week prior to the start of classes and is an important part of settling into studies at Universidad ORT and life in Uruguay.

Latin American, European and North American students do not need a student visa to enter Uruguay. They receive a regular tourist allowance upon arrival and can extend that allowance at the National Immigration Office after three months. They can also choose to leave the country and reenter on a new tourist allowance for another three months.
