Denmark Maymester Program

What does Thor, Loki, Vikings, Little Mermaid, Disneyland and Lego have in common? They are all examples of contemporary American pop-culture who all have their origin in the same space: Denmark! What was the initial inspiration for these touchstones, and what does their cultural legacy look like today? Join the Department of English's Gareth Rees-White and Capstone Scholars Program Leads James Jacocks and Julie Boyken as we travel to Copenhagen, Denmark for Maymester 2025 to learn about Denmark's cultural legacy!

Program Overview

  • Duration: May 12-22, 2025
  • Course listing: ENGL 282-C: Denmark's Cultural Legacy
  • This course will include class meetings during the first half of the Spring semester
  • Course credit:  3 hours

Highlights

  • Start in Copenhagen for a cultural tour including the canals, a workshop on Vikings, and shopping.
  • Visit various museums, including the Viking Ship museum and the National Museum of Denmark
  • Visit the Lego House and Tivoli amusement park and learn about their connection to famous American theme parks.
  • Experience hiking through the natural beauty of the ancient forest of Jaegersborg Dyrehave.

Costs

Program fee: $3,400 (does not reflect the Capstone Scholars Adventure Grant)

Does not include:

  • Airfare, insurance abroad, education abroad application fee, 3 credit-hours of tuition, passport, individual meals, and personal spending
