The School of Visual Art and Design has a partnership with Stormwater Studios, an artist studio community in Columbia. Our own studio space, the SVAD Studio, provides an essential environment for students, faculty members, and visiting artists to develop new work, lead or participate in workshops, give talks, and exhibit their work. We’ve designed our studio to serve as a space to test new ideas and creative experiments, and to connect our students and visitors to the other resident artists. Through the SVAD Studio, we run a Collaborative Residency Program to engage student artist and scholars several times a year.
As a community-facing extension of the School of Visual Art and Design, we value a diverse range of voices and backgrounds and aim to enrich and contribute to the cultural vibrancy of the Columbia arts community. Join us for our programs to learn more about our project and mission.
This program emphasizes a strong collaborative element by placing student artists and scholars together and supporting them in the development of a shared creative vision. This is a unique opportunity for students to explore and learn from one another in a professional studio, in proximity to professional artists, and with the expressed purpose of exploring their collective vision in response to the College of Arts and Sciences' theme semester.
Each semester students can apply for 1-week solo or group exhibitions in the SVAD Studio at Stormwater. Faculty are also encouraged to mount class exhibitions that provide valuable beyond the classroom experience and enhance learning outcomes.
Our Artist Residency Program allows local and nationally ranked artists to develop new work, lead workshops, give educational talks, and host exhibitions. We’ve designed our studio to be an ideal working environment for visual artists to test new ideas, experiment with materials, and engage with our community.
