Bio

Dr. Mike McCall has been an instructor in the psychology department since the fall semester of 2010. Currently, he teaches Introduction to Psychology (PSYC 101), Survey of Developmental Psychology (PSYC 420), Survey of Social Psychology (PSYC 430), and Human Sexual Behavior (PSYC 300).  In previous terms he has taught Sport Psychology (PSYC 380) and Psychology of Video Games (PSYC 589).

In addition to working as an instructor, Dr. McCall works as a psychological consultant to the USC Athletic Department regarding assessment and intervention for student-athletes to promote academic success at the university. Prior to working in his current capacities at USC, Dr. McCall worked in a variety of settings including work as a school psychology consultant and learning specialist for USC Athletics, work as a research assistant, and work consulting at a Montessori school.

Dr. McCall completed a B.S. in psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He completed his M.A. and Ph.D. in school psychology at the University of South Carolina.

Dr. McCall has a wide array of research experience and interests. During his undergraduate studies at UNC, he participated in undergraduate research in a biopsychology laboratory studying the effects of heroin self-administration on immune system functioning in Lewis rats. While at USC, he completed his masters research in the area of reading fluency intervention for elementary school students. He assisted with research projects regarding academic and behavioral interventions for elementary school students and use of curriculum based measurement to assess academic skill growth. His doctoral research evaluated predictors of academic risk and success for student-athletes. Currently, Dr. McCall’s research interest include academic success for student-athletes, working with college students who have ADHD and/or other learning disabilities, assessment of ADHD and learning disabilities, college student retention, and best practices for working with student-athletes recovering from concussions.

Dr. McCall is a member of the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) and the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics (N4A). As a member of N4A, he has served as chair-elect for the Learning Concerns and Enhancement Committee. Dr. McCall has served as a presenter at both regional and national conferences for both NASP and N4A.

Dr. McCall has a variety of interests and hobbies. He enjoys playing tennis, disc golf, ultimate Frisbee, and a variety of other sports. He plays trumpet for the Columbia Community Orchestra, and he enjoys playing acoustic guitar. He likes to support local restaurants and live music as often as possible.
