Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leader

SI Leaders are students who have demonstrated they can navigate a historically difficult course successfully. They are assigned a specific section of a specific course and are required to attend all class meetings and hold three collaborative learning sessions each week for the entire semester.

Eligibility

To be considered, you must:

  • Be an undergraduate student at the University of South Carolina-Columbia
  • Have an overall GPA of 3.0 or above (on a 4.0 scale)
  • Achieve a B+ or above in the course you are looking to support
  • Have completed one semester at the University of South Carolina-Columbia by your start date
  • Have strong organizational and time management skills
  • Have a desire to help fellow Gamecocks

Job Responsibilities

  • Attend all class meetings of the assigned course section
  • Maintain communication with the assigned SI Faculty Partner throughout the semester 
  • Conduct three 50-minute SI Sessions per week throughout the term using strategies/collaborative learning techniques learned in SI Leader Training
  • Promote the SI Program throughout the semester and provide updates to all students enrolled in assigned course section(s) frequently
  • Attend all Bi-weekly Staff Meetings during the assigned meeting time
  • Maintain contact with SSC staff throughout the semester

Breakdown of Hours

  • 3 hours sitting in class for your assigned section
  • 3 hours of holding SI sessions
  • 1 hour of prep time per session (3 hours per week)
  • 1 hour of weekly cohort training
  • 1 hour of biweekly staff meeting
