Parents and Supporters

You play an essential role in your student’s journey. Learning how to support them through the different stages of their college experience is key to their success.

Welcome, parents and supporters of First-Generation students!

Welcome to the University of South Carolina! As first-generation college graduates ourselves, we understand the significance of this journey for both you and your student. We’re excited to partner with you as we work to support your student’s success.

At the First-Generation Center, we’re dedicated to providing the resources, guidance, and encouragement that first-generation students need to thrive. We look forward to working closely with your student as they navigate their college experience, and we’re here to support them—and you—every step of the way.

Both you and your student can expect support wherever you may need it. Please explore our website to learn more about the academic, financial, and on-campus resources available. In addition to the First-Generation Center, the Office of Parent and Family Programs provides many resources to help you. We encourage you to join the Gamecock Family Hub. Tips for Supporting Your First-Generation Student

The beginning of a student's undergraduate career is a time of lots and lots of changes. College life and its various experiences often lead to shifts in social circles, career aspirations, and personal values. While these changes are natural and exciting, your student might find themselves unsure of where they fit in, both at school and at home. Although the journey may be challenging and sometimes confusing, offering your support and understanding as they navigate these changes is crucial.

Show confidence in your student's ability to succeed. Your belief in them will boost their self-confidence. The University of South Carolina believes in their potential, and so should they. While challenges are inevitable, your student has the capability to overcome them. Remember, intelligence and abilities are not fixed; setbacks like failing a test or a class don't define their future success. Every challenge is an opportunity for growth.

Encourage your student to find a mentor through the First-Generation Center. Building relationships is a key part of the college experience, and a mentor can help your student navigate the complexities of campus life. FGC mentors are specifically trained to help your student navigate the unique challenges of the first-gen experience, and to access resources to best support them.

Attend family weekend events and other on-campus events your student invites you to. Your presence matters! If you're unable to attend, find other ways to be present for your student and get involved on campus.

Let your student know how proud you are of them. College comes with many pressures, including the challenge of meeting family expectations. It's important to express your support for their decision to pursue a college education. Your encouragement and love are crucial in helping first-generation students succeed in reaching their goals.
