How Wearable Sensor Technologies can Improve Next-Gen Behavioral Interventions to
Promote Energy Balance
Speaker: Yue Liao, PhD
Candidate for Assistant Professor
TecHealth / Ex Sci / HPEB
Behaviors which can positively or negatively influence the energy balance (physical
activity, sedentary behavior, diet/nutrition) are central to the etiology and management
of obesity-related diseases and present opportunities for targeted and sustained behavioral
intervention. Developments in wearable sensor technology have made access to personal
health-related data more readily available and this in turn provides a foundation
for innovative approaches to promote behavioral changes. This seminar will provide
examples of using sensor technologies in behavioral research with a focus on the novel
application of continuous glucose monitors.
Dr. Yue Liao is a faculty fellow of the Duncan Family Institute for Cancer Prevention
and Risk Assessment at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Liao’s
research areas include the use of wearable sensors and mobile technologies to assess
daily physical activity and sedentary behavior, along with psychosocial and contextual
factors that might influence decisions to engage in those behaviors. Her research
goal is to develop personalized, adaptable, and timely behavior interventions to promote
energy balance in real-world contexts and reduce obesity-related disease risk including
type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Dr. Liao completed a competitive
postdoctoral fellowship in colorectal cancer prevention at The University of Texas
MD Anderson Cancer Center after receiving her PhD in Health Behavior Research from
University of Southern California. She received her MPH with a focus in Biostatistics
from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.
Tech Tuesday Talks is a free, monthly seminar series bringing together researchers from across the USC campus who share an interest in technology-assisted health promotion and disease prevention interventions and research. The series presents a forum to learn about one another’s work, spark collaborations, as well as introduce students to the ongoing research conducted on the USC campus which incorporates technology in health promotion. All interested faculty, staff, students and the general public are invited to attend. Tech Tuesday Talks are presented on the fourth Tuesday of the month in Discovery I Building, Room 140 at noon.
