Inaugural Gerry Sue and Norman J. Arnold Childhood Obesity Lecture Series will feature James F. Sallis

The Arnold School will host the Inaugural Gerry Sue and Norman J. Arnold Childhood Obesity Lecture Series on Thursday, September 29, 2016 from 3:45 - 5 p.m. The theme for the inaugural lecture, which is free and open to the public, is The Future of Youth Physical Activity Research: Dissemination and Implementation of Evidence-based Interventions.

The seminar will take place in the Program Room of the Ernest F. Hollings Special Collections Library, located in the Thomas Cooper Library. The lecture series is sponsored by the Arnold School's Department of Exercise Science and the Gerry Sue and Norman J. Arnold Childhood Obesity Initiative, which is a part of the Gerry Sue and Norman J. Arnold Institute on Aging. Refreshments will be served after the program.

James F. Sallis, Distinguished Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health University of California San Diego, will serve as the keynote speaker. Sallis' primary research interests are promoting physical activity and understanding policy and environmental influences on physical activity, sedentary behavior, nutrition, and obesity. His health improvement programs have been studied and used in health care settings, schools, universities, and organizations.

Sallis is the author of over 600 scientific publications, on the editorial boards of several journals, and one of the world’s most cited authors in the social sciences. Thomson-Reuters identified him as one of the world’s most creative scientific minds of 2015. His current focus is using research to inform policy and environmental changes that will increase physical activity and reduce childhood obesity. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition and the Bloomberg-Manulife Prize for the Promotion of Active Health. Sallis is President of the Society of Behavioral Medicine. 


Parking Information and Directions 

Parking for the libraries is generally available in Bull Street parking garage. See below for walking directions from the garage to the library. Handicapped Parking is available behind Thomas Cooper Library (more information below). 

From the Garage to the entrance of Thomas Cooper Library: 
Take the Bull Street Garage elevator or stairs to Level 4. Walk through the garage to the wide brick walkway. Walk on this brick walkway toward the concrete steps. At the top of the steps, turn left. The Reflecting Pool will be on the right. The entrance to Thomas Cooper Library will be on the left. The Hollings Library is accessed through Thomas Cooper Library (walk toward the back of the library; look for signs for the Hollings Library).

Handicapped Parking
To access handicapped parking, follow directions above to Devine Street. Instead of turning into the garage, continue straight on Devine Street over the wide brick sidewalk. Enter the brick walled area and you will see parking spaces are available to the right. Look for the doorway with the canopy and press the bell. A library staff member will answer the bell and open the door.
