Discover USC brings the university's research and scholarly community together in a new way, unifying celebrations of undergraduate and graduate student, postdoctoral and medical scholar innovation and scholarship into a single full-day extravaganza. An event this big involves many stakeholders from every part of USC.
The Office of the Vice President for Research proudly founded Discover USC in spring 2017 to showcase the innovation and scholarly excellence that happens at South Carolina’s flagship institution of higher education every day. Our vision is to bring together scholars from every level of academic achievement to exchange ideas, get to know their community and share their accomplishments with the entire Palmetto State Community.
The Office of Undergraduate Research planted the seed for Discover USC by founding and expanding its forerunner event, Discovery Day over many highly successful years, ultimately providing a stage for undergraduate students to showcase their research, scholarly and Center for Integrative and Experiential Learning projects. The office promotes inquiry, discovery, and creativity in all disciplines through faculty-student mentoring relationships and the integration of instruction with research, scholarship, and creative activities.
USC’s Graduate School hosted their traditional Graduate Student Day, their comprehensive annual celebration, competition, and award ceremony for graduate students every spring, coinciding with National Graduate and Professional Student Appreciation Week. We are proud to include them as an integral part of Discover USC.
A key driver in the growth of OUR’s original Discovery Day event, the Center for Integrative and Experiential Learning (CIEL) engages students in a comprehensive learning initiative to enhance undergraduate education. CIEL’s focus on helping students integrate experiential and classroom learning makes it a perfect fit for Discover USC. Presenters at Discover USC include students completing CIEL’s signature program, Graduation with Leadership Distinction.
The USC School of Medicine and Prisma Health began collaborating to host their research showcase event, the Medical Scholarship Day of Focus, just last spring. In 2017, they will incorporate research by their medical students, resident physicians and fellows, into Discover USC, adding a unique health sciences feature to this exciting showcase.
