Working at USC

If you have work authorization through F-1 OPT and can apply for the STEM extension, you are expected to do so. Check the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List.

1. Complete Form I-983. You complete Sections 1 and 2, and your supervisor and unit/department's HR representative complete Sections 3-6. ISSS does not sign this form.
2. Submit Form I-983 to your F-1 institution's DSO/advisor so they can upload it to your SEVIS record. You will receive a new I-20 with the OPT request indicated.
3. Submit Form I-765 through USCIS.

Remember:

You can request your STEM OPT Extension I-20 as early as 90 days before your current 12-month OPT Employment Authorization Document (EAD) Card expiration date.

USCIS must receive your STEM OPT extension application before your current 12-month OPT EAD card expiration date.

You cannot apply for the extension after your OPT EAD expires.
