State Need-Based Grant

The State Need-Based Grant is only awarded to South Carolina residents and can only be used for eight academic semesters. The award ranges from $100 to $1,500 per semester. This is based on financial need as defined by Title IV regulations.

Requirements

  • You must be a full-time undergraduate student. 
  • You must be seeking your first baccalaureate (four-year) degree.
  • You must be a legal resident of SC.
  • You must fill out the FAFSA.
  • You must have financial need as defined by Title IV regulations.
  • You must not have been judged delinquent, been convicted of or pled guilty or nolo contendere to any felony in any state.
  • You must not have been convicted of any second or subsequent alcohol or drug-related misdemeanor in any state within the past academic year.
  • You must not be in default or owe a refund or repayment on any federal or state financial aid.
  • You must be making satisfactory academic progress
  • You must meeet  all general eligibility requirements.
  • You must enroll in 12 hours for the fall semester and 12 hours for the spring semester.

In addition to meeting all general eligibility requirements, as continuing education students:

  • you must enroll in 12 hours for the fall semester and 12 hours for the spring semester
  • if you received a State Need-Based Grant in the previous year, you must have earned 24 credit hours during the fall and spring semesters
  • you must have earned a minimum 2.00 UofSC cumulative grade point average on a 4.00 scale by the end of the spring semester
  • only your cumulative grade point average earned at UofSC and UofSC system campuses will be considered in determining eligibility for continuing students
  • if you have earned a 2.00 UofSC cumulative grade point average by the end of the spring semester and choose to enroll in a summer session(s), you will NOT be eligible to receive a State Need-Based Grant if your UofSC cumulative grade point average falls below a 2.00 at the end of that summer session(s).
  • if you are awarded a State Need-Based Grant prior to the end of the spring term, your award will not be official until your grades have been reviewed.

Changes in Residency

If you become a non-SC resident, you will be required to repay your award for any semester(s) you were classified as a nonresident and received a State Need-Based Grant. However, you will not be required to repay your award for any semester(s) in which you were classified a SC resident.
