Continuing Medical Education

Welcome to the Continuing Medical Education (CME) office within the Department for Faculty Affairs & Development at the University of South Carolina’s School of Medicine Greenville. The CME Office supports Prisma Health-Upstate in providing accredited continuing medical education. The goal of CME is to improve patient outcomes and healthcare provider performance.

Mission/Accreditation

The Continuing Medical Education (CME) office is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) with the purpose of: “Transforming healthcare by supporting continuous improvement of medical professionals' competence, clinical performance and professional growth.” Our CME office is accredited with commendation.

Services of the Office

The types of activities we commonly support are:

  • Accreditation:  Review CME activity requests, certify activities for CME credit (after CME Committee approval), apply ACCME standards to ensure activities are free of commercial influence.
  • Licensure/board certification support:  Assist Prisma Health-Upstate physician learners (~1,200) in accessing, documenting, and reporting CME required for licensure and board certification.
  • Event support:  Develop online sites for event information, registration, and evaluation.
  • Program planning support: Use our expertise in adult learning strategies to assist with presentation methods/modalities.

Educational Programs Supported

  • Regularly Scheduled Series (RSS) – Includes, but is not limited to, lecture series, tumor boards, journal clubs, committee meetings (>100 annual series)
  • Courses – Yearly or stand-alone events (e.g., conferences)
  • Enduring material – On-demand content (e.g., online modules or recorded presentations)
  • Learning from Teaching - Personal learning projects designed and implemented by the learner for facilitation. This can be a range of activities such as preparing a workshop or one-to-one mentorship.

Although our department focuses primarily on physician-related learning, we are committed to supporting all healthcare professionals in meeting the continuing education requirements of their accrediting body. We will assist in seeking approval for other types of credit if requested.

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
