The Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of South Carolina, Columbia campus, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to beging Fall 2020. The University also invites applications for one full-time, non-tenure track instructor position in the Department to begin January 2020. Please see details regarding both positions below.
Candidates must have either a Ph.D. in criminology or criminal justice, or an earned doctorate in a related social science discipline. This is an entry-level position; ABDs will be considered, but it is expected that the Ph.D. will be in hand prior to the date of appointment—August 16, 2020. Candidates with only a law degree (JD, LLM, SJD) will not be considered.
Assistant Professors carry a teaching load of 2 courses per semester, including offerings at the undergraduate and, as needed, graduate levels. They will also maintain an active research agenda, mentor and supervise students, and provide service to the Department, College, University, community and discipline. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses, advising undergraduate students, directing undergraduate student research as needed, providing service to the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at USC-Columbia, and keeping up with new and developing knowledge and issues in the field. The position is a non-tenure track, 9-month appointment with a teaching load of 8 courses for the academic year. While some instructional assignments may include distance delivery, instructors are expected to be available for on-campus courses in Columbia. Applicants must hold a master’s or Ph.D. degree in criminology, criminal justice, or a closely related field or a J.D. at the time of appointment. Applicants must be capable of teaching introductory and upper-division courses, and preference will be given to expertise in law-related areas (e.g., criminal law, criminal procedure) and at least one other area that will complement the existing strengths of the Department. Commitment to excellence in teaching and fostering student learning is expected, and experience as a professional in the field is a plus. Renewal of non-tenure track appointments is dependent upon the availability of funds.
