South Carolina universities have been awarded $40 million dollars from Governor Henry
McMaster and the South Carolina State legislature to support workforce development
initiatives for .
USC Columbia, specifically, is building a talent pipeline for this national laboratory by focusing on the recruitment
and STEM education of American undergraduate and graduate students, thus serving SRNL's
requirement of a domestic workforce serving their missions in environmental and legacy management, global security and national defense .
Training in Relevant Disciplines
The South Carolina universities involved in the Savannah River National Laboratory
program will welcome over 1,000 students, from precollege to postdocs.

This office's programs and events offer students experience in relevant science, technology,
engineering and mathematics disciplines through research internships in the summer
and academic semesters, as well as providing nationally competitive stipends for graduate
students and post-doctoral research.

Our Partnership with The Savannah River National Laboratory
The Savannah River National Laboratory puts science to work to protect the environment,
serve national defense efforts, secure a clean energy future and reduce emerging nuclear
threats. SRNL is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, primarily the Office of
Environmental Management and the National Nuclear Security Administration, along with
many other sponsors. The University of South Carolina has partnered with SRNL on numerous
research projects involving students and faculty in the College of Engineering and
Computing, the College of Arts and Sciences and other colleges.
Our office partners with STEM companies, national labs and government agencies to build diverse workforce pipelines and conduct joint research projects. We have partnered
with several high-profile organizations, including the Department of Energy and the
Department of Defense.

Funding Acknowledgement
Through the generous support of Governor Henry McMaster and the South Carolina State
legislature, the University of South Carolina System, Clemson University and South
Carolina State University have been awarded funding to support the workforce at the
Savannah River National Laboratory. As stated in the state budget, “The funds must
be expended collaboratively to conduct research partnerships and develop workforce
training programs designed to fill engineering, science, research, and management
positions.”
The National Laboratories Office is a divison of the USC Office of the Vice President
for Research.
