Our office builds a pipeline of talent for STEM companies by attracting and training U.S. students via our diverse world-class workforce development initiative. We employ strategies that include outreach to South Carolina residents and institutions of higher education.

The State and University Invest in the Future of STEM Students & The Savannah River National Laboratory

South Carolina universities have been awarded $40 million dollars from Governor Henry McMaster and the South Carolina State legislature to support workforce development initiatives for the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL).

USC Columbia, specifically, is building a talent pipeline for this national laboratory by focusing on the recruitment and STEM education of American undergraduate and graduate students, thus serving SRNL's requirement of a domestic workforce serving their missions in environmental and legacy management, global security and national defense.

Training in Relevant Disciplines

The South Carolina universities involved in the Savannah River National Laboratory program will welcome over 1,000 students, from precollege to postdocs.
To be Hired

New faculty hires will be made in areas that mutually support the core competencies needed for the Savannah River National Laboratory's mission
and the academic disciplines of the South Carolina universities.

Programs & Events

This office's programs and events offer students experience in relevant science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines through research internships in the summer and academic semesters, as well as providing nationally competitive stipends for graduate students and post-doctoral research.

Our Partnership with The Savannah River National Laboratory

The Savannah River National Laboratory puts science to work to protect the environment, serve national defense efforts, secure a clean energy future and reduce emerging nuclear threats. SRNL is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, primarily the Office of Environmental Management and the National Nuclear Security Administration, along with many other sponsors. The University of South Carolina has partnered with SRNL on numerous research projects involving students and faculty in the College of Engineering and Computing, the College of Arts and Sciences and other colleges.

Federal & Industry Partnerships

Our office partners with STEM companies, national labs and government agencies to build diverse workforce pipelines and conduct joint research projects. We have partnered with several high-profile organizations, including the Department of Energy and the Department of Defense.

This program introduced participants to careers in research and development with SRNL and featured a series of informative sessions, interactive workshops, and networking opportunities designed to connect participants with resources and support for pursuing careers in STEM.
