Health Research Core Director
The Health Research (HR) Core serves as the hub for ClinTrUSC’s Pilot and Developmental (P&D) Research Project Program. The P&D Program is designed to strengthen ClinTrUSC’s clinical and translational research workforce while advancing research that addresses the health needs of communities in the Midlands of South Carolina.
Through an annual investment of approximately $500,000, the HR Core supports 2–4 one-year Pilot Projects and 2–4 two-year Developmental Projects. Pilot Projects allow investigators to generate preliminary data for career development awards or smaller research grants, while Developmental Projects are structured to position investigators for larger, investigator-initiated submissions such as NIH R01 or U01 applications. A rigorous review process prioritizes scientific merit, feasibility, innovation, and translational relevance, with attention to research focused on health conditions affecting populations in the Midlands.
The HR Core oversees the full lifecycle of each award, from proposal solicitation and review to project monitoring and dissemination of findings. In coordination with other ClinTrUSC cores, the HR Core ensures regulatory compliance, milestone tracking, and strategic planning for extramural funding. Through this integrated approach, the HR Core builds sustainable research capacity and supports the continued growth of clinical and translational science in the Midlands.
