Our clinical research and trials are carefully controlled. These trials—and their participants—are responsible for helping further our medical knowledge and, ultimately, helping people across our state, nation and world.
Department of Pediatrics HIV/AIDS Program
This is the only health care program in the Midlands that provides comprehensive care to children affected with HIV/AIDS. The program is co-sponsored by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control and the South Carolina AIDS Consortium.
Midlands Care Consortium
The Consortium provides comprehensive medical and support services for financially-challenged HIV patients in the Midlands. Operated by the School of Medicine and led by Dr. Helmut Albrecht, M.D. for more than 15 years, the Ryan White HIV/AIDS clinic now serves more than 1,200 men and women in the Midlands area. Assistance with basic needs, including food and housing assistance is also provided. The program was created by the Department of Internal Medicine with federal Ryan White funding in cooperation with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, Prisma AIDS Life Support Services, Prisma Health Richland and the Columbia Free Medical Clinic.
Prisma Health Children’s Clinic
In order to provide regular primary care (a “medical home”) for chronically ill and disabled children from low-income families in the Midlands, this program works in partnership with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control and Prisma Health Richland.
Prisma Health SeniorCare
A Prisma Health Richland and School of Medicine collaborative effort, Prisma SeniorCare provides all-inclusive care to low-income elderly patients in the Midlands.
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Teen Clinic
In partnership with Prisma Health Richland, this group implements a team-based approach to meet the medical and social needs of teenage mothers.
South Carolina Center for Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Disorders
The Department of Surgery, through the South Carolina Center for Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Disorders, provides diagnosis and treatment for infants and children with facial congenital anomalies. The Center is a joint project with the School of Public Health and the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control.
Prisma Health Developmental Pediatrics Program
A Prisma Health Columbia program supported by the School of Medicine, this effort provides all-inclusive care to children with severe disabilities from low-income families in the Midlands.
