Two School of Journalism and Mass Communications alumni will reflect on their Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage of the Jan. 6 storming of the Capitol for the Buchheit Family Lecture at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 26.

Win McNamee, '85, and Josh Dawsey, '12, will headline the annual event, which will be held at the University of South Carolina School of Law Karen Williams Courtroom (Room 103). The lecture is free and open to the public. Directions

McNamee was part of a Getty photography team which took riveting photos of the attack on the Capitol and was honored in the Breaking News Photography category. McNamee took the iconic photo of the self-proclaimed QAnon shaman Jacob Chansley wearing a horned fur hat while screaming out in the U.S. Capitol.

Dawsey was part of a Washington Post team which was honored in the Public Service category for their long-term investigative coverage of the attack. The award committee said that the Post delivered a “compellingly told and vividly presented account of the assault on Washington” that provided the public with “a thorough and unflinching understanding of one of the nation's darkest days.”

"We couldn’t be more proud that Josh’s reporting and Win’s photojournalism contributed to the coverage of the assault on the Capitol that has now been recognized with Pulitzer Prizes," said Van Kornegay, interim director of the SJMC. "Their words and images were an important and vivid witness to the trauma of a dark moment in our nation’s history."

The Buchheit Lecture is sponsored by the Buchheit Family Endowment, which provides undergraduate scholarships and graduate and doctoral fellowships to students of the university’s School of Journalism and Mass Communications. The Buchheit Family Lecture Series was created in 2000 in honor of the late Phil Buchheit, the former president and chairman of Mid-South Management Company and the former publisher of the Spartanburg Herald-Journal.

The Pulitzer was established more than 100 years ago by Joseph Pulitzer to honor exceptional achievements in journalism and is widely considered the most prestigious award in the field.
