The Faculty Replenishment Hiring Initiative (FRI), sponsored by the Office of the Provost, provides funding to hire assistant and associate professors as individual faculty members and as part of inter- or intra-disciplinary clusters of faculty on the USC Columbia campus.
Since its inception, the Office of the Provost has awarded 133 faculty positions through the Faculty Replenishment Initiative (FRI). In addition, 11 SmartState™ endowed chairs and 13 junior faculty positions have been hired through this initiative. Moreover, 20 spouse/partner faculty hires for faculty hired into FRI positions and replacement positions have also been hired. The university has increased its tenure-track and tenured faculty by 120 and it non-tenure track faculty by three.
Candidates for these faculty positions may be hired either as associate professors with tenure or as tenure-track assistant or associate professors. Senior faculty will only be considered if a specific request and a strong case are made. The Office of the Provost provides funds to support salary and fringe benefits costs and start-up costs. The academic units are fully responsible for space allocation and/or building renovations. All offers must be approved prior to an offer being extended.
