Policies and Procedures

Family Friendly Policies

The University of South is Carolina promotes an academic culture that is supportive of faculty and their families. Carolina is committed to attracting and retaining the highest-quality faculty to academic disciplines critical to our state, including business, education, engineering, nursing, public health and medicine — and creating an equitable and productive academic environment. The family friendly policies listed below were created to ensure a workplace culture supportive of family responsibilities (i.e., birth of a child, adoption, health issues, aging parents) and foster a flexible and supportive work culture where all faculty can thrive.

Extension of Tenure Clock and Third-Year Review

Provides additional flexibility for tenure-track faculty members and acknowledges that anticipated or unanticipated life events may hinder faculty members from fully demonstrating their professional qualifications for tenure.

Extension of Scheduled Post-Tenure Review

Provides additional flexibility for tenured faculty members and to acknowledge that anticipated or unanticipated life events may hinder faculty members from fully demonstrating their professional qualifications for post-tenure review.

Modified Duties for Faculty

Provides full-time faculty with some relief from academic duties and the opportunity to respond to anticipated or unanticipated life events or situations when needed.

Faculty Dual Career Accommodations

Enhances USC’s ability to recruit and retain outstanding faculty and academic personnel. To create a framework for exploring employment opportunities for candidate’s spouses or partners across departments, divisions and schools.

Extension of Sick Leave Beyond Family & Medical Leave (FMLA)

Allows up to 180 work days of leave with pay or 180 calendar day of combined leave with and without pay for USC employees with physician-certified illnesses. Authorized leave may extend to 365 days in extenuation circumstances and at the discretion of the president. Leave transfer program is available for catastrophic illnesses.

Part-Time Faculty Status

Provides full health insurance and state retirement benefits if the faculty or staff member is working at least 20 hours per week. Salary and accrued leave are prorated to the number of hours as a percent of FTE.
