Information about the Award

Three Carolina Trustee Professorship Awards are presented annually in the amount of $2,000 each and given by the members of the Board of Trustees. Two awards are presented to Columbia campus professors and one to a professor at one of the other USC campuses. Faculty eligible for the Professorships are those who hold the rank of tenured full professor and demonstrate a record of teaching excellence as well as a record of outstanding performance in research and in public service activities. Excellence in teaching may be demonstrated in any phase of the University's educational mission and in any setting, from the undergraduate classroom to the graduate seminar, in laboratories, clinical practice, independent study, or supervised research.

The Office of the Provost shall make the solicitation of nominees. The nomination shall include a vita, a short narrative summary of the nominee's teaching performance, research accomplishments, and public service activities during the past three years, a letter of recommendation from the nominee's academic supervisor and a two-page statement from the nominee.

The committee is composed of the Chairman of the Board, the Chairman of the Academic Affairs and Faculty Liaison Committee of the Board, a representative of the President, the Provost, the Secretary of the Board and the Chairman of the Faculty Senate (who shall be ineligible to receive the award while serving in that post). The committee will recommend a recipient to the Academic Affairs and Faculty Liaison Committee of the Board for approval and recommendation to the full Board.

The Professorships are presented at the spring commencement dinner. Recipients of the award will be ineligible to receive the Carolina Trustee Professorship for five calendar years after last receiving the award.
