Office of Career Management

Finding the right career is the Moore School's goal for each of our graduates. Success is more likely if an individual is in the right job, at the right organization, at the right time. Basic career management education is at the core of our initiatives.

The Office of Career Management (OCM) is dedicated to the success of our students. Our professional staff is trained and equipped to guide students through the internship and job search process. The Moore School Office of Career Management will be going virtual in the fall of 2020, but students can still make appointments with their career coach for a full range of services.

Our Philosophy

Past studies indicate the average professional will change jobs seven to ten times in a lifetime. In reality, however, it could happen more often because of industry trends, downsizing or economic conditions. The professionals who know how to effectively manage these inevitable changes in the context of their lifelong career goals will be more successful and more satisfied professionally

We believe that our students deserve a cutting-edge business education complemented by our commitment to helping students develop job search and career management skills. To accomplish this, we provide a practical, step-by-step look at the key job search areas. Areas of career management that are covered include:

  • Interviewing Skills
  • Job Search Planning and Research
  • Networking Techniques
  • Negotiating Skills
  • Lifelong Career Planning

We have completed significant research — benchmarking with top business schools and key employers — to develop resume formats that provide key information employers want in the format that works best for them. Before you begin your job or internship search, build your resumé in one of the approved Moore School samples found in the Moore School sophomore, junior, senior or graduate community in the Career Management section of Blackboard.

Once your resumé is approved, you may upload it to Handshake, our custom online recruiting software used to manage job postings, on-campus interviews and corporate information session

We offer a variety of resources to assist in  your job search and career planning, including online assessments, resumé critiques and mock interviews.

The Office of Career Management believes self-awareness is the key to better understanding what career paths will be the most fulfilling. To accomplish this, we take students on an introspective journey as they consider various career and industry options.

For undergraduate students, we offer BADM 301: Careers in the Global Economy, we provide an eight-week "how to" course that teaches each participant the nuts and bolts of job search while developing individual marketing materials for use in the student's search, including a professional resume. Students also develop interviewing skills and learn the strategy of networking and personal branding.  This course is required for all undergraduate students.

For graduate students, this journey is navigated by a comprehensive, robust assessment tool that has been used in industry for more than 50 years: The Birkman Method©. Each student completes the Birkman Method© questionnaire within the first few weeks of school. Individual results are reviewed, evaluated and assessed in various contexts and at increasingly deeper levels throughout the series.

All employer and OCM hosted events will be virtual in the fall of 2020. Most OCM events will be hosted on Zoom, with the exceptions being the Fall Business EXPOs which will be held on CareerEco on September 23 and October 27.

Employers will be hosting their events on a variety of platforms, so students are encouraged to monitor Handshake to see what employers post on their event pages. You can also visit our news and events page for event, job and internship highlights.

The Moore School Office of Career Management is happy to present workshops and presentations on a wide array of career development topics to classes, student organizations, clubs, fraternities, sororities or residence halls during the academic year. Student organizations may request a workshop with this form.

If you need a quiet space for a virtual interview, there are a limited number of rooms available. You must make a reservation to use the rooms. To make a reservation, follow these steps:

  1. Email carolyn.isaacblack@moore.sc.edu with: interview date, start time and end time.
  2. You will receive a confirmation email with the room number.
  3. Check in at the Welcome Center and you will be taken to your interview room.
  4. You are required to wipe down the desk, chair armrests and door handle once your interview is complete. Wipes will be provided.
  5. Make sure you check out at the Welcome Center once the interview is complete.

In the end, each Moore School graduate student leaves us with a unique competitive advantage: the self-awareness and professional presence needed to plan and manage a lifelong career. You won't find a more complete career and professional development program.
