Fees

The Patient Engagement Studio (PES) offers a range of customizable services designed to integrate patient experts into research teams, ensuring meaningful collaboration and patient-centered research outcomes. These services cover consultation, training, payment of Patient Experts, and administrative support to facilitate productive partnerships between researchers and patient experts.

To date, most consultations with the PES have occurred at the "consult" or "involve" level, reflecting different degrees of engagement depending on the project’s needs. Below is an outline of the services available to support this integration, designed to help researchers achieve their patient engagement goals.

Review of documents (recruitment materials, surveys, patient education documents, storyboards etc.).

$50 per patient expert per 1,000 words, additional $100 for a synthesized report of the patient expert feedback.
Minimum two patients.
Recommend at least two to four patients provide feedback.

Review of multimedia content (videos or audio, etc.).

$50 per patient expert per 30 minutes of content, additional $100 for a synthesized report of the patient expert feedback.
Recommend at least two to three patients provide feedback.

Creation of graphic or video content for patient centered recruitment (examples can be found here) or results dissemination.

$100 consultation fee.
$75 per hour (minimum two hours expected).

Not currently an option but coming in the future.

In-person or virtual presentation with Patient Engagement Studio:

$1,955 for the first meeting. Any additional meetings related to the same research conducted within 6 months of the first meeting are $1,425 due to the decreased administrative costs.
Includes pre-meeting consultation with PES director.
Review of presentation with director feedback prior to presentation for patient centeredness and optimal patient engagement.
Meeting with trained patient experts and researcher, includes one-time review of documents and/or multimedia content.
Final report provided by the studio based upon feedback from the meeting.

* If meetings are with an established studio, there is no extra cost. If a new Condition- or Population-Specific Studio is requested, there is an additional $5,000-$8,000 fee for the recruitment and training of five to eight patient experts.

PES is consultant for grant/project.

Administrative support and grant development.
- $500 fee (upfront costs prior to grant development).
- Letters of support provided by PES director and patient experts.
- PES provides standard language about patient engagement in research.
- Management of meetings, scheduling, etc., for PES.
Meetings — $850 per meeting (for grant budgeting).
- Minimum one meeting per quarter.
- Includes pre-meeting consultation with PES director.
- Review of presentation with director feedback prior to presentation for patient centeredness and optimal patient engagement.
- Meeting with trained patient experts and researchers.
  - Summative evaluation of engagement efforts.
PES is co-investigator on grant — one to three PES researchers included in grant as co-investigators (5-20% effort as needed).
- Administrative support and grant development (grant budget includes 15% for PES project coordinator).
  - Letters of support provided by PES director and patient experts.
  - PES provides specific language about patient engagement in research and engagement expectations in the project.
- $750 per grant budgeting meeting. Minimum one meeting per quarter.
  - Includes pre-meeting consultation with studio director.
  - Review of presentation with director feedback prior to presentation for patient centeredness and optimal patient engagement.
  - Meeting with trained patient experts and researchers includes review of documents and/or multimedia content.

Integration of patient experts into research team - $15,000 to $40,000

Recruit and train two to three patient experts on research methods, communication, and collaboration.
Training for research team, including patients, on team building and trust building
Grant developement
- Co-development of the engagement plan and the evaluation plan for grant application purposes.
- Co-development of the grant proposal, including research questions, objectives and methods.
Act as liaison between research team and patient experts as necessary.
- Establish communication pathways between patient experts and research team.
- Administrative support between patient experts and researchers.
  - Scheduling.
  - Payment of patient experts.
Formative and summative evaluations

Integration of patient experts and PES researchers into research team — $15,000 to $40,000 plus 10-20% effort for researchers.

- Feedback on research implementation strategies (e.g. recruitment efforts, dissemination material).
- Co-creation of patient centered graphic or video for dissemination of results.
Formative and summative evaluations.
Patient-centered dissemination of results.
Manuscript preparation and conference presentation support.

Services, fees and processes available from PES director.
Fees for those researchers within the Academic Health Science Center (HSC) are generally waived prior to external funding is obtained.

For individuals outside of the HSC, fees begin at $8,000 but may be negotiated.
