We're looking forward to welcoming the Law Class of 2020 and our new transfer members
of the Law Class of 2019 to the School of Law community! Our New Student Orientation
program is designed to introduce you to the legal profession, familiarize you with
the expectations of this academic and professional community, and equip you with the
study skills to "hit the ground running" on your first day of class. You'll also have
plenty of time to get to know classmates, your peer mentors, and the faculty and staff
who will be an integral part of your law school experience.
Schedule and Activities
Orientation begins on Thursday, August 17. You'll start with registration and a continental breakfast at 8:30 a.m. in the Law School Lobby. After meeting Dean Wilcox and the faculty, you'll jump right into this new and challenging discipline of law study. Watch your email for information on reading assignments for the first class. Dress for Orientation daytime programs is business casual.
After the daytime activities, students return to campus at 5:00 p.m. to meet your attorney mentors and participate in the Professionalism Oath ceremony. Faculty and alumni will be present to welcome you formally to the legal profession, as Chief Justice Costa Pleicones of the South Carolina Supreme Court administers the Student Professionalism Oath. A reception with attorney mentors and faculty follows the ceremony. Dress for the ceremony and reception is professional attire. Family members of new students are cordially invited to attend the ceremony and reception. Over the next four days of Orientation, you will continue to learn how to study law, develop academic success skills, become familiar with the professional culture of the Law School, the School of Law Honor Code and the requirements for admission to law practice, and be introduced to the law school's library and technology resources. On Thursday, students will have pictures taken for the Law School Directory, so plan to look good at least from the shoulders up! You'll have your weekend free to explore and enjoy the University and Columbia, and we'll have some suggestions for activities to meet a wide variety of interests. But you'll want to spend some time with the books, too, since you'll be back in class on Monday preparing for a practice law school exam on Tuesday.
Orientation concludes Tuesday with a lunchtime cookout on the law school patio, after
which students turn to reading and work on case briefs for the first day of class
