As defined by Merriam-Webster:
purpose. noun. pur·​pose ˈpər-pəs. : an objective, effect, or result aimed at or attained.
happiness. noun. hap·​pi·​ness ˈhap-i-nəs. : a state of well-being and contentment : joy.

Purpose, Happiness, and Thriving During Your Encore Years

The later stages of life, sometimes referred to as your encore years, is often a time of major life transitions accompanied by anxiety and unhappiness. Students in this class will learn about what we know about this period of life and develop tools to discover purpose, be happy, and thrive in the later years. The course will include presentations and discussion about the science of happiness, purpose, and thriving, as well as experiential class and home activities designed to increase all three.

Sandra J. Kelly, Ph.D.

Sandra J. Kelly is a faculty member at the University of South Carolina in the Department of Psychology. She received her Ph.D. from McGill University in 1985 and began her career at USC in 1988. She has practiced meditation for over 10 years and has taught a wide variety of courses in psychology and neuroscience at the undergraduate and graduate levels.  Sandra has been the recipient of a number of teaching, mentoring, and research awards and has expertise in the research literature on happiness and interventions that increase happiness and overall life satisfaction. She is excited to be able to teach this continuing education course that will be specifically geared towards those in the later stages of life.
