April 15 update

During the day on Monday, April 22, South Main from Blossom to Wheat streets will be closed. That night of April 22, work will shift to the east (Horseshoe) side of the street. Traffic flaggers will be out to help drivers out as they roll out the changes block by block.

Project Details

The work on South Main, coordinated by the South Carolina Department of Transportation, will bury existing utility lines under the sidewalk and roadway as well as narrow the traffic lanes to one each way. Trees and bike lanes will be added as part of the project as well.

The first phase of the project will shut down the western side (think closer to Assembly Street) of South Main while crews do their work.

During the construction phase, pedestrians will be able to use all crossings at intersections, though sometimes they will be redirected to one half of a block (i.e., northside/closer to the Statehouse instead of both sides of the street). Signage will direct pedestrians around detours. All street parking on South Main will be closed during construction. The university's D lots for faculty and staff will remain in operation throughout the construction.

Also, traffic will still be able to use all crossings with temporary exceptions that will be announced in advance. For example, when crews work on Devine Street in this first phase, the street's tenants and parking will only be accessible from Assembly Street. No traffic will cross from Main onto Devine during this time.
