College of Social Work

Curriculum

The College of Social Work’s curriculum is designed to expand your knowledge of best practices and enhance your critical thinking skills, helping you become a more effective advocate for individuals and communities facing complex challenges.

Program Overview

As a Master of Social Work student at the University of South Carolina, our curriculum will provide you with insight into human behavior, social welfare policy and social work practice. Our three specializations — children, youth and families; health and mental health; and community, social and economic development — offer additional preparation for post-graduate practice.

We also offer several certificate programs and dual degrees that can be earned alongside the MSW degree.

Your Options

Our program offers flexible options designed to help you earn your degree on a timeline that best fits your needs. If you have already earned a Bachelor of Social Work degree, you may be eligible for our one-year advanced standing program at the Columbia campus. The Columbia campus also offers two-year options for full-time and three-year options for part-time students. In addition, we offer part-time programs at our Charleston and Greenville sites and an online program for students in Korea.

Degree Requirements

The MSW degree program is designed for you to earn your degree in one to three years, depending on whether you are an advanced standing, full-time or part-time student. You must complete your studies in six years. Full-time and part-time students must finish 60 credit hours while advanced standing students must earn 42 credit hours. You must receive an average "B" grade or better on all classroom and foundation field courses and an "S" grade on advanced practice field instruction courses.

Our program’s academic regulations are consistent with other master’s degree programs within The USC Graduate School and are in accordance with accreditation standards established by the Council on Social Work Education. In the fall semester of your final year in the program, you must complete a program of study listing of your courses (taken and planned) and file it with The Graduate School.
