Dr. Mitchell received her Doctorate of Nursing Practice in 2008 from the University of South Carolina. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, also from the University of South Carolina, in 2005. She completed a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Psychology in 1999.
Dr. Mitchell teaches in the nursing graduate program. Most recently, she has taught Nurs 705, Nurs 718, Nurs 793, and Nurs 796.
Dr. Mitchell’s research interest include vulnerable populations, graduate nursing education, simulation, policy, and breast cancer survivorship.

Dr. Mitchell is an active member and current President of the South Carolina Nurses Association (SCNA). She previously served as the Commission Chair on Public Policy and Legislation for SCNA. She also serves on SCNA's Peer Assistance Program in Nursing Steering Committee. She is an active member of the APRN Chapter. In addition, she is the current treasurer for the Coalition for Access to Health Care. Furthermore, she is a member of the American Association for Nurse Practitioners, American Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau, and the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties.
Dr. Mitchell is board certified as a family nurse practitioner and an acute care nurse practitioner. She has practiced in a variety of settings including the emergency department, urgent care, and housecalls. She currently practices with the special needs population and volunteers at the Free Medical Clinic.
