Description: Students respond to activities they relate to. “Off-the-shelf” software often lacks personalized content that motivate students with special needs. In the past traditional “authoring” programs have been employed in an attempt to create custom activities for students with special needs with mixed results. Traditional “authoring programs proved to be cumbersome, difficult for professionals and families to learn and use, and lacking in features designed specifically for use in the special needs environment.
This workshop examines the need for, capabilities and use of software specifically designed to create custom activities for students with special needs. Such software may be employed to create custom Cause & Effect, Basic Concept, Choice Making, Language Development, Augmentative Communication, Literacy, Recreational activities, and more. These software programs permit the use of your own graphics, video, recordings, and style. All are designed for ease in learning as well as ease of use by both professionals and families. Special needs activity creation programs to be discussed and demonstrated include Switch-It! Maker 2, Choose-It! Maker 2, Boardmaker Plus, My Own Bookshelf, MyBoard, IntelliTools Classroom Suite, and more.

Description: Boardmaker is recognized as the premier communication overlay design and printing program available. Thousands of teachers, speech/language pathologists, other professionals and families use Boardmaker everyday as an important tool in serving students with special needs. Not merely a tool to print communication boards, Boardmaker is also used to produce materials used to support academics and daily living activities.
Boardmaker Plus is an enhanced Boardmaker that allows communication boards (normally simply printed) to become onscreen talking boards which are accessible through a dynamic display process. This is a great teaching tool as well as a cost effective means of introducing picture-based dynamic display augmentative communication to nonspeaking students. Boardmaker Plus is also used to create onscreen talking educational activities as well as used in language development.
This 1-day lab-based workshop covers Boardmaker and Boardmaker Plus. This is a hands-on workshop in which each participant will work at their own notebook computer with one of these programs. Participants will learn what these tools are and how to design, create, and print manual communication boards, schedules and instructional sequences using Boardmaker. Using Boardmaker Plus participants will learn how to turn their silent communication boards into dynamic onscreen talking boards as well as create educational activities.
