A Recap of 2022 at the University of South Carolina

With the new year, we are reflecting on everything amazing that happened in 2022. For students, this reflection may look like joining a new club and making 10 new friends, adding a minor to match their passions or being awarded a scholarship for academic accomplishments. As a university, we had some big accomplishments as well. Here’s just a few:

Best First Year Experience for the 4th Consecutive Year

Carolina is beyond proud to continue having the best first year experience among public universities in the United States. Our University 101 class acclimates new students to campus, provides community and prepares them with the skills they need for success in college. Outside the classroom, Carolina has created endless opportunities for students to get involved and be entertained on campus.

Gamecock Women’s Basketball NCAA Champions

Campus was unbelievably energized the night the women’s basketball team won the NCAA National Championship! Students ran out of their dorms to jump in the Thomas Cooper Library fountain to celebrate the win. Everyone was cheering and band members voluntarily brought their instruments and played for everyone! The following days, we welcomed home our team, had a celebratory parade through Columbia and enjoyed a free concert from Darius Rucker and Nelly.

New President

In 2022, we welcomed home our 30th president, Michael Amiridis. Prior to serving as chancellor of the University of Illinois Chicago from 2015, President Amiridis was part of USC faculty and administration. We are happy to have him back!

Gamecock Park

Russell House Student Union underwent some big renovations in its dining spaces. The second-floor dining area was converted into Gamecock Park. It is an upscale all-you-can-eat buffet for a meal swipe dining hall.

Football Program Ranked #19

The football team broke many school records this season. For the first time in school history, we had back to back wins against Top 10 opponents, The University of Tennessee and Clemson. The Gamecocks are now ranked #19, which is the highest college football playoff ranking in the Gamecock’s program history!

It’s safe to say that it was a good year at Carolina, and we’re excited to see what’s in store for 2023!
