The University of South Carolina has been recognized by INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine as one of the nation’s top universities for diversity and inclusivity.

This is the fourth year in a row UofSC is named a winner of the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) award. The award is given to schools that demonstrate a strong commitment to a diverse campus experience. This year’s award was given to 91 other schools nationwide, with UofSC the lone recipient in the Palmetto State.

“It is an honor to be recognized by INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine for our inclusive practices here at the University of South Carolina,” said John Dozier, UofSC’s chief diversity officer and director of community engagement. “In every way, we strive to uphold our values as a university community. However, this intentional work is a process, not an outcome. While we are very excited to be recognized for what we are doing, we know that there is more work to be done. As such, we will continue to cultivate a university community that embodies our Carolinian Creed; a community where every student, faculty and staff member feels that they are valued.”

The Carolinian Creed was established 25 years ago as a complement to the university’s conduct code and as a way to underscore the university’s values of tolerance, civility and the respect for the dignity of others.

UofSC offers a rich calendar of multicultural and diversity events for the campus and greater community that includes an annual Martin Luther King Jr. commemoration, a civil rights tour of Southern states for students, as well as observances for international education week and Hispanic heritage, Native American, LGBTQ, women’s and black history months.
